Also known as Ironwood. Handsome small tree with rounded outline, but pyramidal in youth. Dark green summer foliage. For lawns, parks, and naturalized areas. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Slow growing. An American native that is found naturally in the understory. Grayish-brown exfoliating bark.
